Anyone who knows me knows that I’m all about shortcuts, easy arts and crafts projects, quick activities that keep even little kids interested! And this cute art project I did with my toddler is no exception!
The key to this easy art project is: WASHI TAPE! If you’ve never made crafts with washi tape, it is beautiful, silky smooth, comes in all sorts of gorgeous colors and patterns, and is so easy and lovely for little kids to work with! It doesn’t have that uber sticky underside, is easy to cut, apply and even take off of most materials. We love it!
By the way, I just found out that in some places, washi tape is called decorator’s tape or deco tape. Good to know!
What you need:
washi tape in different designs and colors, cut into 2-3 inch strips
All I did was put the cut washi tape strips on the top of a large bowl and gave my toddler a piece of paper with a hand drawn face on it with 2 googly eyes and let his creativity run with it!
So here’s my little guy working hard on his washi tape art picture. Aside from being a truly cool art project, the fine motor skill practice your child will get from this activity is great!
I just can’t get over how cute it is that he sticks his tongue out when he concentrates on an art project!
Well hello there, little washi tape man!
So there it is! So simple, no mess, lots of fun and so many things you can do with this wonderful craft material! If you don’t have washi tape, you could cut duct tape in half length wise, but washi tape is sooooooo much easier to handle for little kids and is already the perfect width for them!
Update: We did this fun artsy craft project again, this time with the girls! Here’s how their washi tape art experience turned out!
Here’s our washi tape stash. Isn’t it gorgeous?
My 5 year old drew a big face of a girl. Naturally. The washi tape was so easy for her to cut and stick on all by herself.
Here’s the finished project! Aren’t the colors and designs outstanding?
My 7 year old created a washi tape flower
And decorated her name (Kerith.) I can’t get over how beautiful washi tape makes everything look!
The 2 year old did not want to be left out. He decided he wanted to decorate a rainbow, so here I am making a (small) rainbow by tracing the edge of a big plate.
Here he is, decorating away!
And here’s the finished product, proudly hung immediately on the fridge!
