So I’ve been a part of this club called, “Around the world in 12 dishes” for quite some time now, but I haven’t gotten around to actually MAKING any of the dishes with my kids, let alone posting anything! (Why are they being so patient with me?!)
OK, let me explain: Around the world in 12 dishes is an online group of moms and teachers who take their kids on a virtual tour of 12 different countries, making a food or dessert from each, and getting to know the people of that country a bit! A very fun and fabulous idea! But it’s only great if you actually DO it, haha!
We have decided (ahem!) that we have a LOT of catching up to do!
So I talked about it with my 13 year old who loves baking and never likes making anything twice, and is especially fond of “scary” recipes, and she was more than a little bit excited to be a part of this project!
The first one we decided to do was Peru. Peru! The closest any of us have ever been to Peru is Mexico, so of course we have to look at a map, the flag, etc. etc. to see just where this curious place is!
I let my daughter choose the recipe all on her own. She painstakingly wrote the whole thing out since our printer is not working right now (Oh pooh.)
She chose a dessert called pionono (had we ever heard of it? Oh, no no! Haha, sorry, couldn’t help it!)
It’s basically a jelly roll cake, with the “jelly” being a caramel filling. I’m not gonna post the recipe, as this site does such a great job, and I think they really know what they’re talking about, ha! Also, although my daughter did her best and the dessert tasted amazing, the roll had a bit of creative licensing to it, so you might not get the right idea when seeing the pictures! ;-P
Here’s what it’s supposed to look like:
She got to work right away
I didn’t get a chance to take pictures of the other kids, because by the time I got around to it, it was GONE! It was verrrrrry popular, and the only complaint was that they only got one piece each!
Here are some fun videos we found on youtube about Peru:
We don’t have a working printer right now, but for those of you interested, there are some gorgeous free printable placemats and passport pages for extra fun and learning! Even if you don’t print them out, you could go over the information on the pages with the kids!
We had no idea Peru was so full of amazing and fantastic things! Now everyone wants to go to Peru!!!
It was a lot of fun and we are definitely looking forward to the next Around the World in 12 Dishes project, as well as to make up the ones we missed!
Check out the other great Peru posts by some fabulous mommies around the world!
